Elvis is in the building

A couple of weekends ago I volunteered on the Butterfly conservation stand at BBOWTs wild wood fair. I had a great time talking to members of the public and playing games such as spot that and name that moth. My favourite bit of the day however was when I went home taking with me this little beauty. May I introduce you to Elvis:

Elvis is an eyed hawkmoth and I’ll be looking after him until he’s fully grown when he’ll be returning to where he came from. However in the meantime he will be teaching me first-hand about moth lifecycles. As you can see on his diet of fresh willow already he has grown a lot. He’ll need all this energy for in a few weeks he will be ready to pupate and then the really incredible change will turn him from caterpillar into beautiful moth. In the meantime he is happy being the king and eating his leaves…
