The loss of little Luna

Today we lost little Luna chicken (named after Luna Lovegood from the Harry Potter books because of her distinctive white markings, but often referred to as little Luna or lovely Luna as she had a really sweet temperament).

She was the rescue in worst condition when they arrived but after a few weeks her comb was getting redder and she seemed to be putting on weight. Alas  the improvements didn’t last. When we came back from my parents after Christmas Luna was sat puffed up in the corner of the run. We brought her into the house and she ate like a horse, so we put her back out and she deteriorated again, this cycle continued  (she wanted to be out with her sisters and we wanted to keep her inside, in the end we decided to let her have her own way). Being back with the other girls seemed to be making her happy and when I checked on the other night I found the other girls all cuddled around her. This morning however I found her little body in the corner of the coop. 6 months of freedom seems tragically short but during that time she explored the garden and claimed her fair share of the mealworms and my hugs. Its always sad to see the departure of one of your pets and i will miss little Lunas pretty white face when I feed the girls in the morning. Sleep safely little hen.
